Ford EDIS Module
From M-Tech Automotive
The Ford EDIS or Electronic Distributorless Ignition System is a computer-controlled ignition system developed by Ford that uses an ignition coil for each pair of cylinders (wasted spark). All the coils are placed in a single module called a coilpack.
It is found on most pre-97 Fords that utilise EFI. Notably Ford Fiesta RS Turbos, Mk3-Mk5 Escorts, XR2is, among others.
Its role is to allow the EEC-IV ECU to drive a wasted spark coil pack. Generally speaking, when installing our engine management systems (which have the required coil drivers built in) we remove the EDIS module. Although, the V3 ECU can be setup to work with the EDIS module directly by request, however our V4 must always drive the coil-packs directly.
The EDIS module is located in the engine bay of the vehicle. On Fiestas it is located against the firewall, and on Escorts it is usually located on the near-side inner wing.
The pinout of the module can be seen below.
