Joes' 2.2 V-Tec Civic Conversion
From M-Tech Automotive
The aim of this project was to fit the 2.2 Prelude V-Tec engine into the Civic 1.3 chassis.
Engine Fitment
After removing the original engine, as well as the donor engine, work began on installing the Prelude engine into the Civic.
The Civic engine was slightly smaller than the Prelude, and as a result the Civics OS inner rail needed to be modified to allow room for the gearbox casing. A double box was installed to keep the strength of the chassis rail:
The NS engine mount required spaicng down by around 30mm, so some alloy spacers were turned out to facilitate this. Also, the O/S mount had to be moved foarward by 25mm...
Once the engine was located in the bay, an engine steady bar was required to be fitted such that the engine was held at the correct angle, rather than sitting level:
The next stage was the installation of the driveshafts. Combing the outter CV cups with the predlude shafts meant that a combination of original driveshafts were able to be used:
The cable linkage from the prelude was also then fitted, completing the mechanical install of the engine and transmission:
Engine Management
The final areas of consideration were the engine management, for which we chose to use a V3 system, and the fuel system, for which we opted on a swirl pot and return system:
After the ECU was installed and the fuel system primed, a base run was commenced, to ensure all of the engines sensors worked ok. They did, and so the vehicle was then loaded on the rolling road to undergo full mapping.
