Zetec to Type-9 Gearbox Fitting Guide

If you are using one of our Zetec Packages in a kit-car, then chances are, you will be wanting to rotate the engine from its usual transverse fitment and somehow get the power to the back wheels.
The easiest, and most common method of doing this is to fit the Ford Type-9 RWD gearbox.
A fairly simple task, and one which we undertake on a regular basis on vehicles that come to us fitted with the Pinto and Type-9, looking to upgrade to Zetec power. (Such as Martin's Pilgrim)
The Zetec engines supplied by us, such as the Zetec 170 or Zetec 190 package, comes complete with the standard Focus 2.0 Flywheel and clutch assmembly which simply wont be up the job.
You will also need to consider the starter motor aswell, luckily heres a simple guide and parts list you'll require. We also supply a Zetec/Type-9 kit that consists of all the parts (flywheel, clutch, spigot and recon starter motor) to make things easier. Please visit our Current Price List for details.
Parts Required
- Flywheel: For this you will need to have a 1.8 Escort Zetec flywheel machined to suit the Pinto clutch plate. Not a hard task to do by any local machine shop, just ensure it is well balanced after.
- Clutch: use the standard Pinto clutch, pressure plate and release bearing for best clutch feel.
- Spigot Bearing: Ford Part No 1596468.
- Flywheel Bolts: Ford Part No. 6952658 always replace when removing/reinstalling your flywheel.
- Clutch release Bearing: Q’Hazel CCT 133 (Standard Pinto Type)
- Starter Motor: Bosch LR707
You will need to grind flat some of the webbing on the Zetec engines sump but this is nice and easy, just take little off by little till the starter fits.
The Type-9 has the same bolt pattern, but you will only be able to fit four of the bolts, though this is considered 'the norm' for this conversion with no problems reported.
